RISE Life Services depends on those who volunteer their time and help enhance the lives of those we serve each day. One particular volunteer, Ms. Dot Exum, has been working with our organization for twenty five years. Ms. Exum continues to volunteer even long after she retired from her full-time role in the agency.

Dot Exum started her journey with Aid to the Developmentally Disabled (ADD) when Grumman closed. She had worked at Grumman for twenty three years. Dot began at ADD in 1994 working part-time at the Jamesport residence. Simultaneously, she also worked at a clinic in Greenport as a medical assistant and phlebotomist. Eventually she moved to full-time with ADD as a residential manager at the Patti Lane house in Riverhead. Ms. Exum retired seven years ago but continues to RISE with us as an on-call member of the team. She works most times at Evergreen and Patti Lane houses when needed.

Not only does Dot work on-call with RISE, but she also volunteers with numerous initiatives. She is a natural fit to volunteer at with events for RISE, such as our annual fundraiser, Shamrock Shindig. Dot began her volunteer service with Island Harvest, collecting food donations. RISE’s food pantry partners with Island Havest. Dot recently participated in our collaborative Community Food Distribution Day on June 27. She also works with the annual mail carrier food drive with Island Harvest. Additionally, Dot helps out at reception in the main office in Riverhead; and with The Main Street Connection day program. Basically, wherever she is needed.

Dot is no stranger to volunteering. Her history goes back working ten years on the school board and volunteering with the local East End hospice as well as the Flanders Ambulance Corp. Ms. Exum’s current hobbies include her involvement with the Eastern Star Organization, the sisters to the Masons, and working with Shriners Hospital.

“When you help others and give back to those who really need it, it fulfills your life,” said Dot, “It’s an enjoyable and rewarding experience.” Dot Exum will continue to help RISE Life Services, along with the other services for which she provides her assistance. Thank you, Dot!
