Resident Spotlight: Michael Pontius

Aid to the Developmentally Disabled (ADD) has 32 residences, from mid-Suffolk throughout the East End. These sites are filled with amazing people and we would like to share spotlight blogs on them as much as possible. Today, we introduce you to Michael Pontius. He is one of the residents who is active in many of the programs we offer at ADD, as well as in his community.

Michael lives in the Kings Drive house in Riverhead. He is retired from BJ’s Wholesale store after 20-years of work there. Michael is a part of our work program and has held a position at the Northville Sensory Gardens seasonally, where he helps care for the animals and the grounds. He also attends a summer camp each year called, Camp Hope, which is a week-long camp upstate.

Additionally, Michael began as one of the first participants in ADD’s brand new day program without walls called, Main Street Connections. He loves it. The program just started this month. This new initiative will help individuals to accomplish their goals within the community by getting involved in activities at a variety of rotating sites. Michael was thrilled to explain about his outing this week to Tanger Outlets Mall, where he worked on his shopping and financial skills and enjoyed lunch. Michael also attends ADD’s advocacy group.

Michael enjoys being active and going out. When asked about his favorite pastimes or activities at home, he energetically responded that he prefers to be out and about in Riverhead, rather than spending time at home. His favorite place to go is the Riverhead Public Library. He also enjoys eating out and likes all kinds of food.

We asked Michael for some advice for those individuals who may be starting out in a residential or day program. He replied, “Find a program like the day program without walls. You’ll love it. It will get you involved in the community and help you to be more active with other programs too.”

Michael’s involvement in ADD’s events, meetings, groups and activities is truly valued. To learn more about the ADD organization, residential housing, job opportunities and advocacy groups, browse our website or call 631-727-6220 ext. 203 with any questions.
