Ricardo Delgado, better known as Ricky, is a friendly and welcoming personality who greets you eagerly as you enter the Main Street Market Food Pantry located at the RISE Life Services office building in Suite 500 at 901 East Main Street, in downtown Riverhead. Ricky is the manager of the food pantry. It’s a very important job, but Ricky tells us that he has fun at work all of the time and looks forward to his work days each week.
Mr. Delgado has been in the residential program for over thirteen years at RISE, or Aid to the Developmentally Disabled (ADD) as it is formerly known. He started at a group home and has moved his way through the residences to a supported apartment program, where he now lives with two other men (in an independent setting) on Riverleigh Avenue in Riverhead.
Ricky has been managing the food pantry since last August, just celebrating his one-year anniversary in this role. He is a conscientious worker, who always arrives to work on time. His responsibilities include picking up the food from the Island Harvest delivery truck every Wednesday morning at the meeting point behind Maximus Gym on Main Street in Riverhead. Then, he unpacks the delivery at the food pantry to get ready for the busy day. Ricky ensures that the refrigerator and freezer are working properly and he also must check the current inventory for expiration dates. After the pantry opens to the public, he assists everyone that comes in with their needs and helps them carry food to their cars. When the day is done, Ricky makes sure everything is clean and organized, ready for the next delivery. Friday is the next delivery made directly to the food pantry by an Island Harvest truck with food donated from Aldi’s Market.
“We are getting busier each week. It’s different here,” said Ricky, “It is open to everyone, and not limited in the amount of times they can come each month. Also, we do not ask for ID or proof in order to give them food. Anyone is welcome to come and get food from our food pantry.”
When Ricky is not working, he enjoys going to the beach; going to the movies; playing video games; and going out to eat, especially at Crystal Gardens Chinese Buffet in Riverhead. He enjoys his job and hopes the food pantry hours will expand, as he is eager to work even more. He has set a goal to save enough money to buy a car.
